Yoga is a system of practices and concepts which ground us in our inherent wholeness.

My path:

The practice of Yoga is an evolving one, and my own experience with it has led me to a profound sense of inner peace, faith, and understanding. I've been exploring this path more and more deeply as a student of Psychology and Religion, a practitioner of Yoga, as an educator, and as a woman in recovery since I began around 1994.

My own practice today is a slow, breath-centered Vinyasa flow. I also enjoy a still, deep practice like Yin or Restorative. Meditation and pranayama (breath practices) are a daily habit for me as well. I live and breathe with gratitude the connection to life and spirit that this practice gives, every day. I've led group and individual private practice since 2008.

Yoga is, for me, a means to “connect the dots” on a physical, mental, and energetic level. I especially am interested in the intersection of personal practice, the study of Yoga ethics, and the potential generative impact of deep self-study and embodied practice on community and culture. Out of that interest, with a diverse group of Yoga teachers, I co-founded Project Yoga Richmond, a non-profit supporting the Yoga community and increasing access to Yoga and meditation, in 2010.

I became a Leadership Trainer for Y12SR in 2016, leading trainings within the US and carrying the message of the power of embodiment, ethics, and spiritual growth towards a path of sustainable addiction recovery.

My teachers:

Rolf Gates, meditation and vinyasa yoga instructor and author of the books Meditations from the Mat and Meditations on Intention and Being. I attained certification through Rolf at the 500 hour level in 2011.

Nikki Myers, founder of Y12SR— The Yoga of 12 Step Recovery.

Writing has been a major part of my practice in recent years. In writing a special connection is made between the head, the heart, and the page. I occasionally write about Yoga, meditation, recovery, cooking, social justice, and many other areas of interest at danawaltersyoga.com/blog. I invite you to visit, and hope you enjoy.
