VINYASA FLOW FOR THE BODY AND BEYOND
Vinyasa Flow + Asana + Anatomy + Alignment
Jan. 3 - March 27
In this 12-week module, we will focus on the essential embodied principles of Vinyasa Flow Yoga. Vinyasa Flow means linking movement with breath. It is a hybrid practice inspired by the Iyengar and Ashtanga methodologies but can also include other forms of practice, theory, and inspiration, both traditional and contemporary.
Vinyasa is not a part of a hierarchical (guru) system, so it is open to interpretation and the creative expression of each individual teacher. Along with the synchronization of movement and breath, Vinyasa can include traditional philosophy, contemporary psychology, reflection, inspiration, mystical inquiry, and prayer, making it a holistic practice that benefits the body, mind, and Spirit.
Because Vinyasa moves with fluidity and rhythm, it is essential to sequence intelligently and offer specific verbal cues to create physical stability to avoid overstretching, compression or injury. This immersion will look at the physiological dynamics and experiential arc of a vinyasa practice that includes Sun Salutations, Standing Poses, Hip Openers, Arm Balances, Backbends, Forward Bends, Yin, Inversion, and Restoratives postures and how to approach practicing and teaching with more mindfulness, skill, and heart.
Each week will include instruction on:
- Pranayama techniques
- Anatomy
- Alignment methodology
- Intelligent and direct cueing
- Correct use of props
- Understanding transitions, "the three pillars", duel actions, and peak poses
- Drishti (eye gaze) and experiencing embodied presence
- Appropriate, creative, heart-centered, and safe vinyasa sequencing
- Exploring both the benefits and risk factors of individual poses
- Cultivating a meditation and prayer practice
- How the asana practice prepares for physical and emotional healing and a deeper connection to Spirit
This immersion is for most levels of students wanting to learn more about the physical practice of asana and to have access to my particular form of guidance and support, and for any teachers interested in deepening their own practice, as well as understanding the mechanics of how I organize, pace and instruct the physical aspects of my vinyasa flow classes.
