MENTAL WHIRLING : Introduction to the vṛttis in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras

Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras speaks of the many ripples or vṛttis that distort our view of ourselves, of existence.  

Specifically he gives us five classes of vṛttispramāṇa (valid knowledge), viparyayah(contrary knowledge), vikalpaḥ (conceptual knowledge), nidra (absence of waking consciousness)and smṛtiḥ (memory).

We will spread our exploration of the five vṛttis over five weeks. In each session we will review & consider one of the five vṛttis, in the hopes of better understanding how at times they influence or further the lack of harmony between our thoughts, our discrimination and our basic assumptions of who we are.
