Trauma sensitive yoga aims to cultivate awareness of the mind-body-spirit connection and build self-regulation skills to address the ways in which trauma is held in the body. Grounded in the idea that trauma lives in our bodies and manifests in somatic patterns, this workshop will explore the impact of trauma, including racial stress and marginalization. Trauma sensitive yoga aims to cultivate awareness of the mind-body-spirit connection and build self-regulation skills to address the ways in which trauma is held in the body. Grounded in the idea that trauma lives in our bodies and manifests in somatic patterns, this workshop will explore the impact of trauma, including racial stress and marginalization. Key elements of trauma sensitive yoga include:
- Building awareness/mindfulness of the mind-body connection and how trauma is held in the body
- Understanding polyvagal theory and its relationship to depression and anxiety
- Teaching in a way that focuses on internal experience rather than expression of asana
- Fostering curiosity, self-trust, and self-confidenc
- Exploring our animal defenses/trauma responses of fight, flight, freeze, submit, or attach
- Developing safety, belonging, and dignity
- Promoting healing relationships
- Teaching self-management and coping skills
- Empowering choices in how one practices and moves one's body
- Pacing practice to avoid feeling overwhelmed
- Helping to safely connect to one's body
- Identifying and changing somatic patterns
- Learning somatic resources and breathing exercises to stimulate or calm our nervous system
- Understanding the role of mindfulness and embodiment
Participants will engage in deeper self-inquiry work on how privilege, race, power, oppression, and other forms of conditioning impact relationships and learn to create more inclusive spaces. The workshop will cover:
- Exploring who we are as racial beings
- Self-inquiry work on privilege, race, power, oppression, and other forms of conditioning
- Promoting post-traumatic growth
- Deepening understanding of polyvagal theory and its application in yoga practice
- Advanced techniques for fostering safety, belonging, and dignity
- Enhancing skills for teaching self-management and coping strategies
- Advanced somatic resources and breathing exercises
- Strategies for empowering choices in practice and movement
- Techniques for pacing and managing overwhelm in practice
- Strengthening connections to one's body through mindful practice

This worksop is also elective credit hours in our 300 Hour Teacher Training
