Movement & Healing - Exploring the healing body through movement, dance, and shiatsu.

This workshop guides participants to find connections between the dancing body and the natural flow of energy within and around us through the discovery of the five elements (Earth, Water, Wood, Metal and Fire) as expressed through the meridian system (energy pathways) that run through our bodies.

We will explore the qualities of the elements by following the physical location of the meridians on the body and practicing how to balance energy through self-bodywork technique (Shiatsu), movement patterns, as well as imagery and improvisation tasks allowing us as we dance to embody the endless qualities of the meridians: fluidity, grounding, compassion, and adaptability, to name a few. As we crave to find balance and harmony both physically and emotionally, this exploration will encourage participants to discover the five elements within them, to learn how to take advantage of their unique characteristics through the awareness of the meridians and to feel open to new possibilities of movement, inspiring our creative spirit.

Forms + Play with Rotating Artists
As a community of working artists, SADC knows that there’s many reasons why a dancer might take daily class that go beyond just practicing dance technique. Sometimes being in class is about self-care, other times about slowing down, often to connect to community, and sometimes purely about working up a good sweat.

Geared towards advanced/professional modern and contemporary dancers, Forms + Play provides a platform to explore some of these alternative approaches and to investigate what it means to take "daily class". Offered weekly, F+P is taught by a rotating cast of artists and innovators whose interests converge on breaking the mold of a traditional dance class.

In Forms + Play, students will explore the interplay of somatics, improvisation, and  set choreography, and how these concepts inform a holistic approach to artistic expression. Classes are both a window into a specific teacher's artistic practice, research, and journey as an artist, and a place for community sharing, collaboration, and co-learning.

Classes are held from 10-11:30am weekly on Tuesdays at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center.
