Filipino Folk Dance 4-Week Workshop - April
with Noelle Campos
7:30 - 9p on Mondays, 4/8-4/29

Join us for a 4-week Filipino Folk Dance Workshop, presented by MPWRD Collective and Shawl-Anderson Dance Center. We launched the Filipino Folk Dance series in February with Tinikling, and focused on Pandanggo Sa Ilaw and Binasuan in March.  We are back again with an iconic dance for the month of April: Singkil.

Popularized by Bayanihan Dance Company, Singkil has become widely recognized as the royal dance of a prince and princess.  The dance presents various elements that captivate the audience: syncopated rhythms, intricate footwork while simultaneously weaving through the bamboos, and lastly sophisticated fan and sword techniques. MPWRD Collective aims to educate about its origins from the Meranao people, an ethnolinguistic group from Lake Lanao located on the southern island of Mindanao.  Recognizing its traditional roots allows us the opportunity to explore contemporary and theatrical versions of Singkil.

MPWRD's goals for these workshops are to learn Singkil traditional and theatrical choreography, passively learn about culture and language, and to explore the cultural tapestry of The Philippine Archipelago. This is a multigenerational space in which we welcome you and your family and friends of all ages.

The workshop is for adults and teens. Teens ages 14+ can attend without a parent/guardian. Students under 14, please come with a parent/guardian. Students age 70+ with limited mobility, please consider coming with a companion as well.

Filipino Folk Dance is an all levels workshop and open to everyone interested in learning. You do not need to identify as Filipino to participate.
