Insight Yin Yoga Series

Registration is closed, but please check other Sangha Studio Events

Insight practice through Yin Yoga. We’ll explore some of Tantra’s seasonal themes through embodied contemplation and self reflection. Journaling prompts and essential oils to deeply anchor your intentions.

In this series, we’ll work through a sequence of long, grounding holds in yoga shapes focusing on the element, theme, and the associated meridians. Each pose will be held for 3–5 minutes and you’ll enjoy a mini meditation in each posture that includes conscious breathwork, visualization, mantra, and journaling opportunities.

  1. 9/29 Balance in the Autumnal Equinox: Water Element Kidney and Urinary Bladder meridians/Spanda & Madhya: Anchoring in the middle place in you in the pulsation of life.

  2. 10/13 Reflection theme: Fire Element Heart Meridians/Meditate on your Heart qualities Self Love, Self Acceptance, Self Care.

  3. 11/17 Gratitude theme/Wood element Liver/Gallbladder meridian. Can’t feel it? Practice it! The more blessings you count, the more blessings you receive and then you are living in the law of abundance, aparigraha (Patanjali 2.39).

  4. 12/15 Community theme: Metal Element Lung meridians. Tantra’s 3 Levels of Relationship: “I am nothing like you. I am something like you. I am nothing but you.”

Join us for this nourishing practice designed to offer more balance, clarity, and power to your being! In this nourishing class, I’ll guide you through a series of long held postures, practiced at your appropriate edge. We’ll use a variety of yoga props or household items so that you can practice with minimal muscular effort.

In Yin yoga we apply tension and compression (think stretching and squeezing) along certain meridian lines from the Chinese medicine model in familiar yoga-like poses to bring more balance to your energy body.

Becoming both aware and accepting of your bodily sensations is associated with decreased levels of anxiety, depression and pain.

As I guide you through mindfulness and breath practices, you’ll cultivate awareness, discernment, and choice making that support your body, mind, and heart.

What is Yin Yoga?

Looking for a more internal yoga practice? Embody your meditation practice through long held postures working at your appropriate edge with minimal muscular effort, allowing the opportunity for your soft tissues (fascia, tendons & ligaments) to be appropriately stressed, creating more resilience. This practice helps build interoception, your ability to be both aware and accepting of your bodily sensations. Interoception is associated with decreased levels of anxiety, depression and pain. In this healing practice we’ll target certain meridians from the Chinese medicine model in familiar yoga-like poses to bring more balance to your energy body.

Yin yoga is stillness practice, and a great entry point for concentration practice (dharana), cultivating awareness, discernment, and choice making. Yin Yoga’s 3 Tattvas (principles) guide your yoga shapes. Working within your appropriate edge (1st tattva) invites discernment, choicemaking, cultivating interoception: your awareness and acceptance of sensation in your body, which is powerfully healing for anxiety. Holding the intention for remaining still (2nd tattva) challenges your bodymind, but still within the 1st tattva, the just right challenge of stillness. The third tattva, time, invites you to “hold” the shapes for a predetermined amount of time and invites the challenge of working with psychological time.

About Joann

I've been teaching Yin yoga for almost ten years now and it in has been a powerful healing container in my own personal practice. This is an experience to embody your meditation practice through long held postures working at your appropriate edge with minimal muscular effort, allows the opportunity for your soft tissues (fascia, tendons & ligaments) to be appropriately stressed, creating more resilience. Yin yoga taught me how to differentiate discomfort from pain, learn to work with stillness, cultivate mindfulness and choice making,  and increase my own interoception to heal my PTSD.
