A Journey Through the Maternal Relationship
A Journey Through the Maternal Relationship
Do you have any unresolved, painful feelings with your relationship with your mother; or with your child as a mother?
There are so many complexities with the mother-child relationship. Some of us have a wonderful, positive, love-filled relationship with our mom and then we lose her and don’t know how to process through the grief to feel happy again. Other people have conflicting feelings of love vs. anger, grief, and/or shame within their maternal bond. Maybe you felt like your mother did not listen to you. Maybe you felt abandoned by her, either physically, due to a job or other reasons. Maybe the abandonment felt emotional, due to her inability to connect with you. Some people grow up with a mother who has an illness and is either physically or mentally unable to take care of them, the way a child needs to be taken care of. There are children who grow up with a mother who has an addiction or who is abusive and/or deeply neglectful of their needs. Other children have a sense of loss through the process of adoption and feeling unwanted and abandoned. Some mothers are in pain over witnessing their own child suffering in a variety of ways. Many of these mothers are blaming themselves for the pain of their child and unable to break free of it. And then there are the mothers who lose their own child, a process that a mother should never have to endure.
What does one do with all of the complex variety of emotions that arise in the maternal relationship? All of these dynamics lead to the child feeling a lack of worthiness and self-love within themselves.
