At its best, asana practice can be a mirror to help us see our structure more clearly so that we can transform it according to our highest intentions. As a yoga asana instructor, anatomy matters! Developing a strong foundation in anatomy will serve you in many ways, including helping you understand the “why’s” or “why not’s” of common asana cues.

This is a weekend designed for yoga teachers who want to deepen their understanding of structural anatomy and bring a stronger foundation to your teaching. We will cover the basics of anatomical language and movements, and then dive more deeply into muscular anatomy. We will gain an understanding of common structural habits and learn ways to transform, rather than reinforce, those habits in our practice and our teaching. There will be teamwork, drawing, dancing, and embodying as we strive to integrate our newfound knowledge. The weekend will be interactive and fun. You will leave inspired by the magic that is the human body, and empowered to speak more confidently about it as you inspire others with your teaching.

By attending this weekend training, you will:

  • Learn to speak the language of anatomy so that you feel more confident in your teaching and in your communication with other healthcare practitioners
  • Understand how to optimize the body’s skeletal support
  • Refine your understanding of postural alignment and how to optimize this in asana practice
  • Put to rest some of those nagging anatomy questions you may have, such as whether you should be telling your students to “tuck the tailbone” or not, and why sometimes, “tight” muscles won’t yield, no matter how many years you spend stretching them!
  • Build a solid foundation for muscle anatomy by getting to know key muscles in the body – their attachment sites, actions, and targeted yoga asana to stretch and strengthen each one
  • Develop basic tools to address some of the most common structural challenges for modern humans
